K.O.P.S.
Knoxville’s Opportunity for Pride & ServiceK.O.P.S. Building Future, Building Pride, Building Community Clean, Strong, Healthy & Vibrant Neighborhoods are essential for Knoxville to flourish. Celebrating & Building Knoxville Join the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce and the K.O.P.S. team to help us enhance Knoxville’s image. K.O.P.S. unites youth, families, seniors—all members of the community—identifying Knoxville’s treasures to preserve, create, and improve for our future.K.O.P.S. coordinates clean-up and beautification projects as well as service project to build a stronger community. A stronger Knoxville requires strong, healthy and vibrant neighborhoods. K.O.P.S. programs will focus on the Knoxville Square & Surrounding Neighborhoods.Knoxville Square Our Historic Knoxville Square is a treasure we must preserve. In 2004, the Marion County Courthouse benefited from a $3.3 M restoration. A number of beautification projects have been completed including the WW II Memorial and the Historic Bandstand. Knoxville can be proud of a number of Historic buildings that remain on the Square. The Wells Fargo Bank Building on the NW Corner and the Iowa State Bank Building on the SE corner, are two of the most impressive. K.O.P.S. builds on the work that began with the 2004 Courthouse restoration with the “KNOXVILLE KLEEN SWEEPERS” program. Square merchants and business owners will join together on Thursday mornings at 9:00 am to sweep the sidewalk outside their store/place of business. The Courthouse bells will chime at preciously 9 o’clock signaling to the businesses that it is time to sweep. Brooms are provided to each business and empty storefront have been adopted by businesses off the Square. A clean Square, free of debris and weeds, increases Community Pride. Good Neighbors Knoxville is renowned for its hospitality and friendliness. Knoxville residents are quick to accommodate our many visitors. Perhaps sometimes we may forget that we must be good neighbors first. Neighborhoods are vital to the wellbeing of the community. K.O.P.S. “GOOD NEIGHBOR” program provides pick-up and disposal of large household items including furniture, appliances and other non-hazardous waste. The program will also assist elderly and handicapped homeowners with home improvement projects, such as painting, as well as lawn care and debris removal. 2006 Knoxville CROP WALK
2006 Knoxville CROP WALK Knoxville CROP Walk to fight hunger is Oct. 22 The 2006 Knoxville CROP Walk is right around the corner. Walkers from all over Marion County will walk to fight hunger on at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 22. This year’s walk “taps into water” by helping Church World Service in its efforts to provide access to safe drinking water to people in need around the world. The walk also shares 25 percent of its proceeds with Helping Hands Food Pantry in Knoxville. Last year, CROP walkers raised $3,150 on a beautiful autumn stroll through Marion County Park. Walk organizers hope the 2006 walk brings more great weather, more walkers and more funds to fight hunger in Knoxville and around the world. In addition to the traditional 3.1-mile route, this year’s walk has a special new feature for walkers of all ages, the “Golden Mile.” This shorter route is for the very young and young-at-heart who want to help CROP fight hunger. A special guest, Rev. Russ Melby, Director of Iowa Church World Service, the statewide coordinator of CROP Walks, will participate in this year’s Knoxville walk. Pastor Bob Smith of Helping Hands Food Pantry says his agency is very grateful for the money that CROP Walk provides each year. The 25 percent portion of walk funds that Helping Hands receives provides added support for the hundreds of families served there twice every month. Walkers will gather at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22 at First Presbyterian Church, 409 S. Park Lane, to register and rev up for the walk. Local musician Katie Davis will lead songs before walkers hit the trails at 1:30 p.m. The routes will include educational signs and activities to raise awareness about clean water and sanitation. After the walks, all walkers return to the church, for snacks and drinks. All walkers receive prizes from area restaurants or stores, and the top two fund-raisers receive gift certificates. For more information about CROP Walk, or to receive sponsor forms for yourself or your group, contact Pat Finan at 842-5267 or stop by Helping Hands, 117 E. Main St. in Knoxville.
