Knoxville Hospital & Clinics set to go Tobacco-free March 1, 2007
Knoxville Hospital & Clinics set to go Tobacco-free March 1, 2007 KNOXVILLE – Knoxville Hospital & Clinics (KHC) has announced plans to become a tobacco-free campus on March 1, 2007. KHC is committed to promoting the health and well-being of all patients, visitors, volunteers, and employees. Under a new policy, the use of tobacco products are prohibited: in all areas within the hospital & clinic buildings, on all property maintained by the hospital, in all vehicles owned by the hospital, in all employee vehicles when parked on hospital property, by all employees during paid time, including while on campus. This policy covers all individuals working, visiting, or receiving medical care within the boundaries of the hospital property. “As a health care organization, it is our responsibility to create a safe and healthy environment for all of our employees, patients, and visitors,” said Ann Helwig, CEO at Knoxville Hospital & Clinics. “Creating a tobacco-free facility demonstrates our commitment to the overall health of our employees and the community.” KHC will offer smoking cessation classes “Fresh Air Tuesdays” for patients, employees, and community members beginning Tuesday, January 16 and will continue as long as needed. The classes are led by Dr. Michael Van Natta and held every Tuesday morning from 7 to 8 a.m. in the Lobby. In addition, Marilyn Smith, Marion County Tobacco Coalition, will participate in KHC’s “Love your Heart” day on Wednesday, February 14 where she will assist community members who wish to participate in “Preparation for Cessation.” Many other hospitals in Iowa have gone tobacco-free. Two of the state’s largest health care providers, Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines and Iowa Health-Des Moines, went tobacco-free on July 1, 2006. The Iowa Hospital Association as well as the Iowa Attorney General have fully endorsed and supported Iowa hospitals in their quest to become tobacco-free campuses. Knoxville Hospital & Clinics, a Critical Access Hospital serving Marion County and the surrounding area, is dedicated to providing personal, progressive quality health care with compassion. For more information regarding this release and other happenings at Knoxville Hospital & Clinics, call the Public Relations office at (641) 842-1418.
