IOWA STATE FLAG DAY
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 2006 5:00PM KNOXVILLE BANDSTAND COME CELEBRATE THE IOWA STATE FLAGS BIRTHDAY! Our Liberties We Prize, Our Rights We Will Maintain. Strength and compassion, together on a banner held by an eagle are at the center of the Iowa Flag. The red, white and blue of our flag is easily recognizable as the banner of Iowa.In 1998 a bill known as House File 2146, in the Seventy-seventh General Assembly certified that March 29 is designated as Iowa State Flag Day. The day is to urge that schools, civic organizations, governmental departments, and all citizens and groups display the Iowa State flag on that day and to reflect on and consider the heritage of the state flag. The impetus for final adoption of an official state banner originated with Iowa National Guardsmen stationed along the Mexican border during World War I. The Guardsmen saw that the units from other states carried official banners and the Iowans felt that they needed the same to identify their origins. This prompted the Daughters of the American revolution into action. Designed by Mrs. Dixie Cornell Gebhardt of Knoxville, the banner consists of three vertical stripes of blue, white and red. Gebhardt explained the meaning of the colors. As well as a reference to the colors of the United States the color blue stands for loyalty, justice and truth; the white stands for purity and the red for courage. Opening the 5:00 PM ceremony on March 29 in Downtown Knoxville is Mayor Harv Sprafka. The Knoxville VFW in conjunction with the American Legion will provide the color guard. There will be live music and entertainment to celebrate this prestigious day. A special rendition of the Iowa State Flag Song will be performed by renowned local volcalist Katie Davis of Knoxville. This beautiful song was composed by Esther May Clark in 1948 with words by E.O. Osborn. Both were residents of Knoxville.

LEADING OR FOLLOWING?
In the 1940’s there was a munitions plant located in a small mid-western town. Almost everyone who lived there worked at the plant. Like so many plants across the country supporting the war effort, they worked around the clock. A supervisor on the first shift would always walk to work the same way. Every day he would stop at the little jewelry store on Main Street and look in the window. This went on for three years. The shop owner became very curious about this, thinking the man was trying to make up his mind about purchasing the clock. One day the shop owner could stand it no longer and, decided to meet the man and ask him. The next morning he stepped out of his shop, met the man, and told him he had been observing him for three years looking at the clock in the window. Was he thinking of buying the clock, the jeweler inquired? After apologizing for any concern he may have caused, the man explained that he was a supervisor down at the plant and one of his duties was to sound the noon whistle so all the worker would know when to take their lunch break. Everyday he would check the time and set his watch by that clock. The jeweler shook his head in ironic disbelief. He told the man that for the last three years he had been setting that clock by the noon whistle! A Spanish proverb says that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man rules. If we have just a little sight, a little understanding, we have great power!By John Grogan
