Stickel Resigns

On Tuesday, April 4, 2006, we accepted, with regret, the resignation of Brian Stickel as our Knoxville Chamber and Economic Development Growth Alliance Executive Director. Brian has accepted a position as Director of Marketing with Knoxville Raceway, a move he feels will allow him to work more with event promotion, his true love. As much as we hate to see Brian leave the Chamber, we are excited that he, his wife Cindy, daughter Jess, and son Rob will continue to be a part of the Knoxville community.

Brian has done a wonderful job in his time as our chamber exec. He has led many new initiatives, and revisited earlier ones that needed revitalization.

With his guidance, we have initiated the Old Home Days fall festival, developed the Smart Solutions growth plan, and put together an expanded visitors guide with other area towns and attractions.

Brian has been a wonderful ambassador for us, and has developed a great rapport with leaders in business, industry, and government in Knoxville and beyond.

While we wish Brian nothing but the best in his new endeavors, we are not standing still. A search committee has been formed and will begin the process immediately of filling his position.

Knoxville is moving forward, as witnessed by many community initiatives, such as the soon to open Stepping Stones Early Learning Center. While we continue to deal with challenges faced by communities everywhere, it still seems that Knoxville is poised and positioned for growth and vitality!

We need all of your help, with it we can, and will, make Knoxville an even greater place to live and work! Good luck, Brian, and we’re glad you’re still in Knoxville!

Craig Agan
Chamber President

DELEGATE AND SUPERVISE

Do you ever find yourself with little or no time to grow your business and implement new ideas? Are you always too busy doing your business instead of managing it and being the administrator? Many small business owners fall into this gap and feel there is no way out of it. They are so absorbed in the day-to-day operations that they can’t step back and look at the bigger picture. And that bigger picture may show ways of acquiring new customers, adding new products or services, and maybe even expansion. It’s like a horse running with blinders on, you only see what’s in front of you, not what’s all around. And the ideas to improve a business and grow it may not always be right in front of you.

So you need to find quality time to be the owner and entrepreneur so your business can grow to it’s full potential. But you don’t really want to give all the tasks you do everyday and let a subordinate handle them. Then don’t give them all up, just some of them. There is no reason why an owner must do everything in a business, especially if you have full and/or part-time employees. And if you don’t have enough people on your staff to delegate to, add part-time employees. The cost of adding them will be much less than the additional revenue you will make by growing the business.

To find out what you can delegate to free up some of your time, get a piece of paper and make a list. Start writing down everything you do in an average day at your place of business. I mean everything starting with opening the door in the morning, making coffee and turning on the computer. You should have at least 25 things and maybe a lot more. Carry the list around with you for a day or two and keep adding things that you had forgotten. You may be surprised at how long the list will get. Many of you may need a second piece of paper.

Once your list is close to complete, sit in your office or a quiet room at home and go over it. Start crossing off things that you would never delegate like signing checks, ordering expensive equipment or doing payroll taxes. This should eliminate no more than one-third of the list. The rest are possible things that could be delegated, even if only on a trial basis. You could easily have someone you trust open every day and get the office or store ready for the day’s business. And interviewing and training can be done initially by one of your staff with you coming in at the end of it for the final decision. Making a schedule of employees hours or what you need to order can be submitted to you for final approval saving you all the time of making them up from scratch.

As you look at the list of what you have been doing all day, many things will jump out as obvious and should be entrusted to employees right away. Others you will want to delegate but may have to think about how to supervise your staff for a while until you are comfortable letting go. Some more important or difficult tasks can be phased in over a longer period of time. Your staff will be ready and willing to learn new things and even feel more respected because of your trust in them. So maybe your delegating is serving two purposes. Freeing up some of your time and making employees feel they are a greater part of the company and it’s success.

Once you have extra time, use it wisely to investigate new ideas and roads to continued growth. And, yes, even take an occasional afternoon off and hit the golf course or shopping mall to regenerate. You will see the overall business much clearer with less busy duties and be able to guide it in new directions. As your business grows, you find it necessary to delegate even more things to employees who have proven themselves in the past. Start making that list today.
